This dissertation explores how individuals meet and mate in the 21st Century. Technology has always influenced the way we date, but meeting a partner online is increasingly common. I employ a mixed methods approach to understand the complex online dating space. Using three unique data sources, I explore how facial attractiveness, gender, and third parties structure online dating interactions. In chapter one, I examine the influence of facial attractiveness and demographic factors on initiation and response behavior on a match-based online dating site. I also influence whether the context of the online dating site, match-based, influences traditional dating scripts. I use data from an online dating site to examine these questions. The results of this chapter indicate that facial attractiveness and demographic factors influence initiation and response behavior online. In addition, match-based sites help to diminish the effect of traditional dating scripts on initiation and response behavior online.

Subscriber Account active since. Dating has gone through some major changes over the years. The rules regarding how singles meet, where they go, and who foots the bill are a lot more fluid than they were just a generation ago. Apps and the Internet can expand your dating pool far beyond the boundaries of your immediate neighborhood, and allow you to gather intelligence on a person before you meet face to face. But there are some aspects of dating in the 21st century that are a lot more complicated and potentially more dangerous than what your parents had to deal with.
Social media is one of the best ways to get the dirt on a potential partner without having to hire a private investigator. A quick scan through their friend list and photos can give you a closer look at their political views, hobbies, and even what they had for dinner last night. But all of that information can come at a price. Knowing too much about a potential partner before you even meet them can lead to you walking into a date with a preconceived notion of how that person is going to be.
If you already think you have your date all figured out, you might see them only as you want to, as opposed to how they actually are. Plus, a first date is always more fun if you actually have things to talk about that you don’t have to pretend you don’t already know. Dating in the age of Facebook and Instagram can also be complicated — especially when you’re still trying to decide how to define yourselves. Seemingly simple decisions like posting a picture of the two of you together or changing your relationship status to make your coupling Facebook official can become problematic if you’re not ready to share your news with your best friend from third grade and your Great Aunt in Iowa.
For your parents, a date may have looked something like this: your father picked your mother up from her home — probably with a bouquet of flowers in hand — escorted her to dinner or a movie, and dropped her off at her door with a polite promise to call her in the morning.

We live in a society where relationships take on so many more forms than the bonds our parents and grandparents shared. It seems like we are hearing more and more conversations about open relationships, and polyamory. Finding hookups are becoming preferred over committed relationships.

Once upon a time, in the Pony Expresso cafe in Seattle, a man and a woman began to experience the long-mysterious but increasingly scientifically investigated thing we call love. The first stage is called “limerence. The man, a thenyear-old University of Washington research psychologist named John Gottman, was drawn to the woman’s wild mane of black curly hair and her creativity: She was an amateur musician and painter as well as a psychologist like himself.
The woman, a thenyear-old named Julie Schwartz, who’d placed a personal ad in the Seattle Weekly that John had answered, was turned on by John’s humble little car—voted the ugliest vehicle in the University of Washington faculty parking lot—and his expansive curiosity. He read physics and math and history and kept a little spiral-bound notebook in his pocket that he used to jot down things his companions said that captivated him.
They talked avidly; it felt as if they’d known each other forever. Over the following months they drew closer and closer, proceeding through subsequent stages of building a fulfilling love relationship. John learned about the unhappy home life growing up in Michigan that had driven Julie to spend so much time in the forest by herself, and Julie learned about John’s desire to understand deeply earth’s biggest mysteries, like the nature of time. They kayaked together. They joined a synagogue. They married and had a daughter, fulfilling one of John’s longtime dreams, and bought a house on a forested island three hours north of Seattle, fulfilling a dream of Julie’s.
They fought. They attended couples therapy.

The difficulties of dating in the 21st-century could well be summarised in one word. Men and women who were hoping to find singles would head off to social situations where they would come across other singles looking to be paired up. The venues ranged from bars to nightclubs to social clubs. A courtship process would take place and partnerships form. The s brought a raft of newfound civil liberties to western society, including the promotion of same-sex relationships and a much more positive attitude to interracial romance, at a time when discrimination was still a serious issue in some areas.
But perhaps the greatest impact on dating in recent times has been the advent of online matchmaking. Where singles once had to leave their homes and go to situations where they could connect with like-minded individuals, now they can be given access to a diverse range of prospective partners from the convenience of their own web browser. All that is required is membership of an appropriate dating site and a lot of enthusiasm.
The rise in dating sites and apps has been nothing short of phenomenal.
